Q1. A student notes four facts about a certain plant tissue: (i) its cells are living and have thin cell walls, (ii) it stores food and sometimes carries out photosynthesis, (iii) when its cells contain chlorophyll it is given a special name, and (iv) in aquatic plants large air cavities develop in it to provide buoyancy. The tissue described and the special name in fact (iii) are respectively:
- A. Parenchyma; chlorenchyma /
- B. Collenchyma; aerenchyma /
- C. Parenchyma; aerenchyma /
- D. Sclerenchyma; chlorenchyma /
Solution
Parenchyma is the simple permanent tissue with living, thin-walled cells that stores food; when it contains chlorophyll it is called chlorenchyma, and in aquatic plants it forms aerenchyma with air cavities. The clue about chlorophyll in point (iii) specifically names chlorenchyma.
Q2. Three of the following are grouped together because of a shared property, and one does not belong. Pick the odd one out: parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma, xylem.
- A. Collenchyma /
- B. Sclerenchyma /
- C. Xylem /
- D. Parenchyma /
Solution
Parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma are simple permanent tissues made of one type of cell, but xylem is a complex tissue made of several cell types.
Q3. A sprinter pulls a cord-like tissue in her leg that joins a muscle to a bone. Which tissue has she injured, and which related tissue instead joins one bone to another?
- A. Injured a tendon; ligament joins bone to bone /
- B. Injured a ligament; areolar tissue joins bone to bone /
- C. Injured a tendon; cartilage joins bone to bone /
- D. Injured a ligament; tendon joins bone to bone /
Solution
A tendon connects muscle to bone, while a ligament connects one bone to another bone.
